Investment Casting

Investment casting (also known as lost wax casting or precision casting) is a manufacturing process in which a wax pattern of the finished part is created and attached to a wax "tree" that includes the gate and runner metal delivery system. After the tree is assembled, it is repeatedly dipped into a liquid ceramic slurry and covered with sand stucco until a thick shell is made. Once the shell has completely dried, it is heated until the internal wax melts away and the hardened ceramic shell becomes an expendable investment mold.Then the molten metal is poured into the cavity where the wax pattern was. Once the metal solidifies, knock off the ceramic mold and cut off the casting components. The additional finishing are then applied, like grinding, machining, and polishing. Investment casting is usually used to produce parts in complex shapes with high precision and surface requirement.
